Custom Vintage Porsche Garage in Beaufort, SC
Allen Patterson Builders, a NAHB Certified Master Builder and Southern Living Custom Builder Network member based in Beaufort, SC, designed and built this custom garage to house and showcase a client’s vintage Porsche collection. The space combines working mechanic’s bay and driving simulator lounge into a single detached structure, finished with the same craftsmanship APB brings to every custom home.
A Garage Designed Around the Cars
The garage centers on a two-car, four-post automotive lift that stacks one vintage Porsche 911 above another, doubling the storage capacity of the footprint without doubling the square footage. Diamond-plate catch trays, safety-striped edges, and a dedicated lift motor housing keep the mechanical hardware clean and unobtrusive against the garage’s board-and-batten walls.
Below the lift, a rolling blue tool chest and a matched mechanic’s cart keep hand tools, fluids, and diagnostics within arm’s reach of the cars. A full workbench along the back wall, built from a butcher-block top and a blue steel base, gives the owner a dedicated space for maintenance work, with pegboard and drawer storage for organizing parts and tools.
Sage Green Walls, White Trim, and Gallery-Style Display
Rather than treating the garage as purely functional space, APB detailed it like an extension of the home. Sage-green shiplap wainscoting runs the length of the room, capped with white board-and-batten trim and topped by white walls that carry a running gallery of framed motorsport photography and vintage racing posters, arranged salon-style from floor to ceiling.
A black-and-white checkerboard runner leads down a narrow gallery walkway lined with additional framed prints, connecting the main bay to an adjoining workspace. An arched, multi-pane exterior door and paned windows on both walls bring in natural light and echo the architectural details found throughout APB’s custom coastal homes.
A Dedicated Racing Simulator Setup
Adjacent to the lift bay, APB designed a dedicated space for the owner’s racing simulator setup: a full bucket racing seat, pedal set, direct-drive wheel, and triple-monitor mount sit on a custom rig, with a bookshelf beneath holding racing manuals and reference materials. A yellow-and-black storage cabinet, additional seating, and a Porsche-crest area rug anchor the space as a lounge for the owner and guests between garage sessions.
Storage, Safety, and Finish Details
Every functional element of the garage was finished to match the aesthetic of the display space:
- A fire extinguisher and safety signage are mounted near the entry door, code-compliant but unobtrusive
- Speckled epoxy flooring throughout resists oil, tire marks, and daily wear while brightening the room
- Exposed structural beams overhead were milled from a tree cut down on the property, tying the garage’s ceiling detail directly back to the homesite it was built on
