The Allen Patterson Builders team recently traveled from Beaufort, South Carolina, to Dallas, Texas, for an unforgettable Brand Immersion experience at the Kichler Experience Center. Hosted by Coleto—Kichler and Progress Lighting—the event brought together members of the Southern Living Custom Builder Program for hands-on lighting education, product demonstrations, and plenty of inspiration.
Learning How Lighting Transforms a Home
Lighting is about much more than selecting beautiful fixtures. The right lighting plan can completely change how a home looks, feels, and functions.
During our visit, industry experts explained how thoughtful lighting can enhance both the interior and exterior of a home. We learned more about layering different types of lighting, highlighting architectural details, creating inviting outdoor spaces, and choosing solutions that complement the way homeowners live.

Hands-On Tape Lighting Training
One of the highlights of the trip was a hands-on training session focused on installing tape lighting. Tape lighting is a versatile option that can add subtle, functional illumination beneath cabinets, along shelving, inside built-ins, and around architectural features.
We even had the opportunity to wire and test our own tape lighting to see whether we had installed it correctly. Not every attempt lit up on the first try—but we are blaming at least one of those attempts on a screwdriver that was far too large for the tiny screws!
The activity gave us a better understanding of the installation process and the important role that planning and precision play when incorporating specialty lighting into a custom home.
An Evening of Great Food and Texas Wine
The experience was not all work! Our first evening included an incredible wine dinner, where we enjoyed a delicious meal and even sampled a port made in Texas. Who knew?
It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with other builders, exchange ideas, and spend time with professionals who share our passion for craftsmanship, innovation, and creating exceptional homes.
Bringing New Lighting Ideas Back to Beaufort
We returned to Beaufort with fresh ideas and an even greater appreciation for the impact lighting can have on a home. From statement fixtures and exterior illumination to discreet tape lighting, every selection contributes to the overall atmosphere and functionality of a space.
