While Allen Patterson Builders has been part of numerous high-end projects like the 2018 Coastal Living Idea House, much of our focus is on cottages that bring classic architectural details into a scale and budget that works for a wider range of the population. A prime example is the ‘Midtown Square’ in-fill project in downtown Beaufort, where two dozen 1800-2000 square foot cottages were named Southern Living Magazine’s ‘Best Planned Community’ in 2013.
As a direct descendant of ‘Tuscarora Jack’ Barnwell who built forts for King George in the Carolinas in the early 1700s, Allen traces his family roots to the Colonial Days of Beaufort. The company vision is to draw on the vernacular architectural tradition of the Lowcountry and translate it into the fine southern homes of today. Nate Schoen handles the planning and contract phase, working with the great local architectural talent in Beaufort or providing custom design-build services in house.

I always tell our Clients to think about the space they actually use in their current home and design the new space without the waste – that leads us to the master down, 2 bedrooms and 1 bath up, with a user-friendly Kitchen/Great Room and wide porches… a classic Southern Cottage.”
